Survival Instinct

There is little over a week left of me reporting on Chesterfield, before I make the move to another League 1 relegation straggler in Rochdale, and the Spireites find themselves 6 points adrift of survival, and just a point behind their Manchester-based rivals with just 8 games remaining. It’s a sorry situation for any football fan to see their team on the brink of relegation, but by winning the right games, having the right attitude, spurring on your team; there is a huge chance of survival. Here’s why…

There are still 4 fixtures against relegation rivals to be played, with the b2net hosting 3 of those fixtures in what is set to be an exhilarating and potentially heartbreaking season for Chesterfield fans. When Wycombe, Rochdale and Scunthorpe visit the club, both teams will be dying for a result, and it’s upto Chesterfield to find that spirit, create an atmosphere and force their way out of what is essentially a perilous return to League 2. I can honestly say that I believe the crowd can change a result. I’ve seen it at Stoke before. The crowd roars and players suddenly up their game, it’s a boost of morale that every player just might need. 9 points from those 3 home fixtures would see the Spireites gain vital ground on their rivals and may genuinely see the club beat the odds and stave off the drop. Why can’t it be done when it has happened to so many other teams before? The word impossible is simply not possible. Positivity is integral to survival.

As a Stoke fan, I have seen my team involved in 2 promotions and survive a relegation battle and I can tell you absolutely that the battle for relegation is filled with oodles of desperation. But to see the team you live for continue to play at the same level though is a feeling you will never forget, and I completely understand the emotions that run through your mind at such a time. Although with a packed stadium, thousands of fans singing their hearts out for every single one of those 11 men can rally a side low on morale to bigger and better things. Instead of picking the faults and looking at relegation as a certainty, look at this as an opportunity to get behind your side, look at this as an opportunity to propel yourselves from this situation and keep your club in this league. Look at so many amazing survival stories and beat the odds. I’m behind the team, are you?
