So December is now upon us and so to is the latest edition of Pottering About. A successful month with Cheltenham means I will certainly continuw with this project which allows me to visit teams I wouldn’t normally visit whilst also adding to the lists of grounds I can now say I have visited and expanding my general football knowledge of other leagues too. With a second league 2 team in a row chosen, I’m starting to get a real feel for lower league teams and it’s reminiscent of supporting Stoke as a mid-table 3rd Tier team as a young child. It’s an awful lot of fun and it certainly quenches my thirst for football knowledge.
Burton are going well in League 2 and sit jut adrift of an automatic promotion spot in 5th as it stands. With a young manager at the helm and a team of many talents, it looks like it may just be a great season for the Brewers. Despite the departure of Shaun Harrad in January, Burton have managed to bring in 3 fantastic strikers since then who are all absolutely on fire. Justin Richards, Calvin Zola and (perhaps the most successful of the three) Billy Kee have all made a remarkable impact scoring an impressive number of goal since their arrival. Northern Ireland Under-21 international Kee has bagged 11 goals in 14 league games for Burton whilst Zola and Richards have scored 5 and 9 respectively. An impressive 25 goals between three players this season has see many tip Burton for success, but unfortunately there is a reason for the goals raining down. A leaky defence has meant that Burton have had to take a ‘they score one, we score 2′ approach into most games with a worrying 26 goals conceded in 19 games. Interestingly it has been 34 games since Burton drew 0-0, the 4th highest run behind Plymouth, Morecambe and Dagenham & Redbridge.
It’s sure to be an exciting experience and I will hopefully be visiting the Morecambe v Burton game on New Years eve which with both teams rarely drawing 0-0, it’s sure to be either an extremely open, high-scoring game or the exact opposite with sods law dictating a bore draw.
